HIGHLIGHTS - SPURS 0-1 EVERTON Tottenham ended the /20 season strongly having gone the final six league games of the season unbeaten. One of those included a home win over Everton, who Spurs are unbeaten against in. 9/13/ · Tottenham Everton: Jose Mourinho's hosts BEATEN in Premier League opener as Dominic Calvert-Lewin's bullet header seals impressive win on the road for Carlo Ancelotti's new-look Everton . Tottenham-Everton live incidents, goals, cards, substitutions, lineups, statistics, formations.Everton have been dreadful away from home against top six teams. The last time they had won a fixture of this kind, Roberto Martinez was the manager in December and Costa Rican full-back called Bryan Oviedo scored the crucial goal.
There have been 40 attempts since that success over Manchester United, 28 of which — often miserably — ended in defeat, but there was never a suggestion here that miserable sequence would continue.
Everton had freshness and enthusiasm, everything Tottenham lacked, and relished the job. Early days, of course, but you could see in the opening exchanges what difference the additions to Everton's team had made.
James Rodriguez, in particular, looked different to anything that has appeared in a Blue shirt in recent years, his left fizzing passes beautifully from right to left.
For a club whose fans has been starved of a hero for too long, there is a glorious opportunity for this Colombian with film star good looks at Everton.
His skill and ability is beyond question but it was pleasing to see he had the desire, too, standing firm in the face of some heavy challenges.
There was confidence in Everton's team and they should really have taken the lead in the 15th minute when Ben Davies inexplicably put Toby Alderweireld in a position where he had to have a foot race with Richarlison, a race he was destined to lose.
Richarlison nudged the ball away from the Belgium and hurtled towards goal, round Hugo Lloris, but as Everton's bench got out of the chairs and began to raise their arms in celebration, the Brazilian couldn't keep his cool and lifted his shot miles over the bar.
Star summer signing James Rodriguez made his debut for the Toffees on Sunday afternoon. The Colombian equipped himself well on his first appearance in English football versus Spurs.
Still, it was encouraging. Everton were miserable when they came here in July, their impoverished display leaving Ancelotti startled, but Tottenham's rather formulaic style invited them to be bold; Ancelotti knew there was an opportunity if they could make the right decisions.
It was not, initially, one way traffic. Tottenham threatened on the break and the best opening in the 33rd came from a flowing move that led to Son Heung-min ushering in Dele Alli, rather than playing in Harry Kane, but the midfielder's drive was superbly saved by Jordan Pickford.
Everton's goalkeeper needed to be alert just before half-time, too. Matt Doherty scuttled forward and exchanged passes with Kane but Pickford was assured, standing tall.
It was a mature save to gloss a mature display, there were no rushes of blood to the head. Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti can be very satisfied with his team's display in north London.
Mourinho and Ancelotti, who are good friends, catch up before the start of Sunday's match. Stout defending — Allan, the Brazilian international and fellow midfield debutant Abdoulaye Doucoure tackled anything that came within five yards of them — gave Everton the foundation and in the second period, they made it count.
Lucas Digne's perfectly weighted free-kick, which arced and bent across the six-yard box, demanded a finish be applied and Dominic Calvert-Lewin applied it, hanging in the air before thumping his header past Lloris.
Mourinho middle and Tottenham were second-best and struggled to create chances late on. Mourinho blamed Tottenham wilting on their lack of physicality but another view would be to say they kept being outwitted by the visitors, who were beating these particular opponents for the first time since December Richarlison should have been the man to turn Tottenham's light-off but he wasted a header, following a wonderful James cross, then fizzed a shot inches wide of the far post.
It was a shame neither went in as the usually understated Ancelotti was so effusive. We have this desire, this ambition. I think we can.
One side is expected to challenge for the top-four with top-six the absolute minimum requirement, while the other simply hopes of breaking into the top-fix, so it makes sense.

With Mourinho set to begin his first full season at Spurs, look for him to fully implement his style and tactical ideas on this team from the opening whistle.
Defensive solidity, combative midfielders, counter-attacks and, ultimately, narrow victories. Post was not sent - check your email addresses! If you want to blame somebody for that, it's me.
I was critical of my boys because they are not in my opinion critical enough with themselves, I asked them to demand more from others, I asked them to put their colleagues under the pressure of the team spirit you have to give.
A couple of bad words, but I think it was something very important for the team to grow up, for that to happen you need to demand more of each other and be strong personalities.
At half-time, I said when I saw the reaction I had no doubts they would stick together until the end. Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti : "We competed.
We could compete better, yes, we could, we lost a lot of second balls but we were in the game until the end. We could do more, but we have to keep fighting.
The dream to go to Europe is still there. It was a battle in midfield, and in the second half we created more, had more space in the middle, and had not a lot of chances but we were better in possession.
Unbeaten since the restart and having won their two previous games coming into this one, Everton had the opportunity to overtake Tottenham with a victory in London.
Instead, they struggled to impose themselves on the game and did not commit enough bodies to the attack until it was far too late.
Indeed, it was not until the 81st minute that they had their first attempt from inside the penalty box. Carlo Ancelotti has Everton going in the right direction but this was a reminder that there is some way still to go - something that Gary Neville noted on co-commentary for Sky Sports.
There is no need. They have talented players. Get on the ball. Get to the ball. He has just got to shift the mindset. It is almost as though the players feel they don't belong.
